Medicine and Community Service Trip to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

Travel, Explore & Learn

Head overseas to the breathtaking island of Sri Lanka with our Medicine and Community Programme. Students joining this trip will discover a new world of culture and tradition as they help with medical outreach and take part in social and cultural activities.

Students will shadow medical staff during ward rounds, in clinics and theatres. Through observation and asking questions, they will exchange knowledge with professionals and see what it’s like to practice medicine in different fields.

The group will also have time to give back to the community that has taken them in during their trip. They will do this with a beach clean-up or light renovation work – this will depend on the needs of the area at the time of travel.

Students will learn more about Sri Lankan culture as they take part in a cooking class and a traditional dance lesson. During the weekend, they will venture out into the sacred city of Kandy to explore the Temple of the Tooth Relic and a tea factory. The group will be immersed in the Sri Lankan way of life, enjoying the local cuisine, exploring Colombo, and getting to know the local community.

Medicine and Community Service Trip to Sri Lanka

Our adventure in 7 days

Welcome to Sri Lanka

On arrival day, a UniHawk staff member will welcome and collect you at the Colombo Airport (CMB).

Students will then be taken to their accommodation where they will have a few hours to unpack and settle in before the welcome dinner in the evening!

Orientation Day

Students are given culture awareness training to gain insights into the Sri Lankan culture, customs, and traditions. They will be shown the local areas and then taken to their placement to get to know the facilities, meet the staff and discuss expectations, and their work schedules.

In the evening, the group will be taken out to enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.

Placement

Students will begin their placements. They will get the opportunity to learn from experienced doctors through observation and gain some basic and practical, medical work experience.
A good portion of the learning will be done through shadowing doctors in a clinical setting. Students will learn how to diagnose and treat many different diseases and conditions, some of absolutely novel. This is a great opportunity to see a day in the life of a medical professional in Sri Lanka and get a feel for what practicing medicines is like in a real-life setting. In addition to shadowing doctors, the group will assist professional medical staff with health checks during community outreaches. They will support staff by taking on jobs such as measuring patients’ height, weight, blood pressure, and blood sugar.
The group will receive training in these areas, to ensure they feel confident and comfortable while working with patients. They will also take part in workshops where they can learn about things such as

  • Anatomy
  • First aid
  • Tropical diseases
  • Ayurvedic medicine

Students will conduct medical awareness sessions in schools. They will put together and share presentations about common health issues, and educate the children about the importance of dental care and nutrition.
Through all of these activities, volunteers can help to make free, basic medical care and education more accessible to people in rural and disadvantaged areas.

Social and cultural activities

Students will take part in a cooking class during their stay to learn how to make a delicious Srilankan dish.

Other activities will include learning to play traditional Avurudu games, playing sports, such as indoor football and cricket, and a movie night.

Sightseeing in Colombo will include:
Visiting Independence Square, Gangaramaya Temple, Red Mosque, Shopping Mall, and Galle Face. They will also visit the local market and temple and enjoy a day by the beach or pool.
